Ship Ahoy Zele ‘Pirate City’ during Roparun

24 May 2018

Roparun is a sponsor relay race from Paris to Rotterdam and from Hamburg to Rotterdam. The entire proceeds go to people with cancer. The motto is: "Add life to days, where often no more days can be added to life". Read all about it on www.roparun.nl.

Already for the tenth year, a team from FireWare travelled to Zele to help decorate the Fountainhof  - in cooperation with the Zele Fire Brigade team - with all kinds of effects for the passage in Zele. This year the theme was "Pirates". The Zele Fire Brigade spared no expense by placing a giant pirate boat. Jef Van Acker (88) has been building the boat for many years. It was never completely finished, but turned out to be very suitable to get a second life in this way. A beautiful top was set up complete with masts, sails, barrels of rum and lots of details. The boat was officially baptised "Jef of the Caribbean" during the opening on Saturday evening.

Fantastic party

With its Stratuses and FireSpots, FireWare provided thick plumes of smoke from the cannons and an explosion simulator created matching cannon thunder. With light effects, the ship, the dodo, children's entertainment and the square were further illuminated.

The passage was a fantastic party! It's great to see how entire teams move through the city to immerse themselves in the hospitality of Zele for a while. Zele has already become Roparun city of the year several times. The runners determine in which municipality they experience the best hospitality. Will Zele also be declared Roparun city in 2018?
