CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

FloodEx: Collision with crushing and fire

A simulation of the top of North Holland being hit by a major flood was simulated during the international FloodEx exercise. Fictional villages were drawn on the maps in the Alkmaardermeer and in the Grote and Kleine Vliet. Hundreds of peoples were stuck for two days after a storm surge: in cars, on roofs or on small pieces of land. Some were seriously wounded, confused, aggressive or even deceased.

Both the domestic and international collective emergency services were challenged with coming to everyone's aid. FireWare was used for the simulation of a large number of scenarios.

A collision took place at Medemblik's old pumping station during the mayhem, caused by everyone trying to get away from the rising water as quickly as possible. A fire broke out and tempers were running high. A medical team was quickly dispatched across the water and the fire service dealt with the fire and removed the crushed driver from the car. The driver was taken away by the trauma helicopter. Bystanders were screaming and pulling at the aid providers. Everyone wanted to get away as quickly as possible!
