CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

Floodex: Flooded houses

A simulation of the top of North Holland being hit by a major flood was simulated during the international FloodEx exercise. Fictional villages were drawn on the maps in the Alkmaardermeer and in the Grote and Kleine Vliet. Hundreds of peoples were stuck for two days after a storm surge: in cars, on roofs or on small pieces of land. Some were seriously wounded, confused, aggressive or even deceased.

Both the domestic and international collective emergency services were challenged with coming to everyone's aid. FireWare was used for the simulation of a large number of scenarios. This included the placing of some very true to life roofs. These were specially built and placed on pontoons. 'Survivors' were collected from the roofs with helicopters and boats. Those who were less fortunate were floating in the water. These dummies were developed and dressed especially for this purpose.
