FireWare developed and built the ‘Tame the Flame’ market van for the North Holland North Safety Region. The market van has been set up and furnished as Smokey’s, the smoke detector, living room. A television is suspended on the living room wall, showing an animation of the dog Smokey.
All sorts of accidents are happening. The dryer catches fire, as does a pan in the kitchen. Accidents are actually also happening in the living room itself, in synchronisation with the animation. The animation includes a quiz which the general public can participate with. People can vote by choosing the correct answer on the fire alarm, which has been built into the market van’s fold down side panel.
Smokey
Smokey is a helmeted watchdog and has been the fire service’s mascot for the past five years. Auke Raaff, Senior Policy Advisor at the North Holland North Safety Region explains: “After all, a smoke detector is an electronic watchdog which comes into action during calamities and thereby literally saves people’s lives. Smokey has certainly captured the attention of the general public. He also travels through the Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe regions”.
Fire Safety
The campaign has found a fun way of putting fire safety under the spotlight. Make sure prevention and a timely alarm system is firmly in place, as you will only have three minutes to get yourself to safety in case of a house fire.
Events
From the Huishoudbeurs (Ideal Home Exhibition) to a market or open day at the fire station. Tame the Flame is frequently used. “Tame the Flame immediately attracts attention and can effectively compete with other experiences. The show lasts almost fifteen minutes, but people tend to keep watching and actively participate. The large number of smoke detectors which are subsequently sold are an excellent indication of the campaign’s success.”
