When a person has been in the water for an extended period, it’s crucial to lift them out horizontally to prevent a sudden drop in blood pressure in a hypothermic individual. This is especially vital during helicopter rescues. This training manikin is specifically designed for such scenarios. It can be realistically placed in a rescue harness and remains in a stable “W” position while being hoisted by a helicopter.
The Helicopter Rescue Training Manikin simulates an (unconscious) person in water. It floats horizontally, vertically, or at a 45-degree angle to represent either a live person or a body. Compared to the Water Rescue MOB manikin, the Helicopter Rescue Manikin features lighter legs, making it easier for trainees to position them in the harness. With straps located inside the knees and ankles, the legs can be secured together.
The robust nylon mesh frame absorbs water quickly, keeping the legs submerged while only the head and shoulders remain visible above water. The dry weight of an adult manikin is 40 kg (88 lbs), increasing to approximately 65 kg (143 lbs) when first lifted out of water. Due to the mesh fabric, water drains quickly to minimise excess water in the helicopter.
The manikin’s bright orange overalls and SOLAS reflective tape on the head ensure it is highly visible in open water. This helps trainees quickly locate the manikin and perform rescue operations efficiently. For scenarios where you want the “casualty” to be less visible, an optional S&R hoodie can be used. This challenges trainees further by partially covering the manikin to reduce its visibility in water. Using a thermal imaging camera during your search? Consider the waterproof thermal imaging mask. This heats the manikin’s head, making it visible on thermal cameras.
The Helicopter Rescue Manikin is an excellent addition to training scenarios for coastguards and rescue teams, defense and naval operations, fire departments and emergency services, offshore operators and the maritime industry. These realistic training tools enhance the preparedness of professionals working in high-stakes rescue and recovery environments.
