FireWare stages familiar house fire scenarios to make elderly people aware of risky behaviours

10 November 2022

Research by Margo Karemaker for the NIPV, shows that elderly people often know that there are certain fire risks in their homes, but are not always aware that their behaviour can influence it.

For the study, a number of rooms were set up at the Twente Safety Campus in Enschede. FireWare was asked to stage familiar scenarios in these rooms. A fire in a pan, a smouldering sofa due to overheating of a tablet on the charger and an overloaded extension cord; the instructor can easily activate the scenarios to raise awareness among the elderly.
