CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

Reading Smoke: Can your smoke machine simulate the right smoke patterns?

20 July 2023

The smoke machine: the faithful companion of many fire departments around the world. No training tool is used as frequently as the smoke machine! But does the smoke pattern produced by the smoke machine truly match the smoke patterns you want to expose the trainees to? Is filling a room entirely with smoke really such a good idea?

Vertical smoke vs. horizontal smoke

Every firefighter in the world understands that heat and hot air rise. Yet, in 99.9% of fire training exercises, smoke machines are used horizontally. At FireWare, we have strong opinions about this. How can we set up a realistic training if something as simple as the direction of the smoke is incorrect?

That's why, at FireWare, we genuinely looked into what is needed for a truly excellent smoke machine for fire training exercises. And the most important requirement, in our view, is that a smoke machine should be usable both horizontally and vertically. Not either-or, but both!

The FireWare Cumulus and Stratus can be used both horizontally and vertically. By placing the smoke machine vertically, you can create a very realistic layer of smoke. Alternatively, use the Cumulus/Stratus Aiming Piece with Storz coupling to direct the smoke without tilting the machine.

FireWare Cumulus and Stratus: Designed for the emergency response industry

The FireWare Cumulus (1300 W) and Stratus (2600 W) smoke machines are true powerhouses. They can effortlessly fill large spaces with smoke, and they can also convincingly simulate a smoldering fire. Subtle layers of smoke or impenetrable smoke curtains? Horizontal or vertical? Adjust it on the machine and make your training even more realistic!

They are also the perfect partners for simulating leaks in pipe systems or manifolds since they have a Storz coupling at the front. You can connect other accessories, such as a smoke hose, to it.

Fires, IBGS, CBRNe, HAZMAT, technical assistance, wildfires—you name it, the Cumulus and Stratus can handle it! Of course, you can easily connect the Cumulus and Stratus to all FireWare interactive training systems, such as the Pandora's Box and the Incident Server.

Extremely robust construction: yet lightweight

It might not be politically correct to say, but everything gets destroyed at the fire department. (And we don't mean that negatively). That's why we made the Cumulus and Stratus extremely robust, constructed in stainless steel. And we see that it helps: we are currently even exchanging Cumulus and Stratus smoke machines from fire departments that have used them for years, and they can still go on for another round! We're truly proud of this level of durability.

Especially because this durability hasn't compromised usability. The machines are still extremely lightweight, so one person can easily place them on a roof with a ladder. As you can see, the entire machine was developed with the professional first responder in mind!
