Every third Saturday of June, we remember the men and women who have given their lives in the fight against fire and for our safety. Firefighters work daily under often dangerous conditions to save lives and minimize damage. Their work is invaluable. The third Saturday in June is the day to reflect on the sacrifices they have made.
The Badge of Honor and Firefighters’ Monument
The national remembrance takes place at the firefighters’ monument in Schaarsbergen. This monument stands for the respect and appreciation we have for our fallen firefighters. Here, the badge of honor ‘Water and Fire’ is made, a symbol of the elements firefighters deal with daily. This badge consists of two streams of water that meet at 10 meters high, forming an arch of honor. The badge is made at 13:00 not only in Schaarsbergen but also at many fire stations across the country.
Fallen Firefighters in the Netherlands
Since 1945, a total of 97 firefighters have died in the line of duty in the Netherlands. These numbers highlight how dangerous the work of firefighters can be and the risks they take daily to protect others and save lives.
A Fire Station in Your Neighborhood
With approximately 950 fire stations spread across the Netherlands, there is always a fire station near you. These stations are important parts of our community and are always ready to help in emergencies. The remembrance takes place not only nationally but also locally at these stations, where firefighters make the badge of honor on the third Saturday in June at 13:00. This is an impressive way to remember. You are also welcome to watch and show your respect by being silent for 1 minute.
