CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

Column: From Spark to Flame – from WhatsApp to Webinar

08 April 2020

We like to share this column by Bas Bor from Safety Region South Holland South. A nice behind the scenes image before, during and after the live webinars of the security regions.

From Spark to Flame - from WhatsApp to Webinar

While running, you often have time to reflect and you often get good ideas. Thus the idea arose to write a column and to inspire the colleagues. Inspiration is what makes your work fun, and varied. This time, following last week where a small spark became a flame and a whatsapp message became a webinar; a live broadcast on YouTube.

"Dear colleagues,

Because of corona our training fell flat. How can we do something useful and offer our remote officers what they need? Are we able to quickly switch to a lesson and develop a remote (webinar) lesson?"

Together with eight enthusiastic colleagues we started work. The result was a live webinar on gas incidents looked at by more than 850 (!) colleagues. Colleagues from South Holland South, all other regions, Belgium and even from St. Martin. And after the broadcast, hundreds of colleagues watched the video.

As a group how did we reach this column understanding? Understanding that might inspire you as a colleague and give you the push to achieve great things;

  • Agree a common goal; we want your videos in a short time with quality content that will ensure that we improve the professon of firefighters. Different expertises and perspectives were joined. Not; this one should also think of something, but; who can also add something! Strong together!
  • Get into the action mode; #gewoondoen, yes this battle cry is perhaps touchy in our organisation. Yet we arrived at a product by doing normal. Just talking does not lead anywhere.
  • Dare to try; even though you do not know whether it really becomes a success, you can try. If it really is nothing, you know that for the future and you have at least tried.
  • Do not go for a 10; if for once you do not go for a 10, you can still score a sufficient. Impose yourself no lofty ambitions, but go ahead and dare to make mistakes. Do not impose yourself a 10 also ensures that you reach your goal in less time.

But who were actually the biggies who contributed to this success? These were:

  • You as a colleague who worked hard in the background to bring this idea to implementation
  • You as an instructor/presenter who dared even when vulnerable to appear before the camera while perhaps some colleagues watching had their own douts ..
  • You as a viewer who took the time to work on your own competences
  • You as a leader who gave us time and space to create it.
  • You as a colleague who gave unsolicited reflection and critical competence
  • You as a reader of this piece, probably inspired to do things normally!
  • You as a colleague who becomes curious and yet will here watch the webinar.
  • You as a colleague who believes in this success and thinks about the contents of the next webinar.
