CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

View tip: “Rachel valt binnen”: How realistic can you make a staging?

11 April 2023

April 9 was the day: episode 7 of Rachel valt binnen. This episode focuses on how firefighters practice. This time not at a large training center: but on how to turn your own town or city into a training center, using realistic staging. And, of course, FireWare is a specialist in that!

You can watch the episode back here: the fire simulation item starts at the 17th minute.

When was it recorded?

The recordings were made during this exercise: a very intensive day of filming, during which a large exercise was run, teaching material for a staging training was made, and ZAPP joined in.

But what kind of material was used for this staging?

What do you need for this kind of staging? A question we frequently get. Therefore, we have made a summary of what materials we used for this exercise!

For control:

The complete staging was controlled from one point by tablets. For this purpose we used 1 Incident server and 2 Incident clients. The Vesta fire extinguisher trainers on the roof were manually operated via wireless remote control by a separate safety officer on the roof. The Incident servers and clients also provided a realistic soundstage.

The rooftop fires:

A hybrid simulation technique, combining real fire and simulated fire, was used on the roof. The real fire was provided by a number of Vesta fire extinguisher trainers. For the smoke image, 6 Stratus smoke generators with Perforated Smoke Hose sets were used. This was completed with a number of FireSpots and Phoenix silkflames. To get the smoke image truly realistic, Outdoor smoke fluid was used.

Indoor fires:

Instead of Stratus smoke machines, Cumulus smoke generators were chosen for the indoor fires. Again, a number of FireSpots and Phoenix silkflames were used. Mini Silkflame LED were also used for the smaller fires. Inside, Medium smoke fluid was applied.

Victim:

In the episode, they search for a dummy a thermal imaging camera. A Duty range manikin of 30 KG was used for this purpose. This manikin is equipped with a special suit that can be heated electrically: a Thermal Imaging Suit.

Extinguishing:

During the episode it is easy to see that "digital" extinguishing is done with blue light. Because in the building it was not possible to actually use water. An Apollo LED training fire hose nozzle was used for this purpose.

Renting instead of buying

Did you know that at FireWare we have a special simulation team that can be deployed anywhere in the world to stage major exercises? And that FireWare also has a huge rental fleet of exercise equipment? So if you want to organize a big exercise yourself, it can be interesting to hire either the knowledge or the equipment, or both... It saves a lot of time within your own organization.
