CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

What is a realistic training environment? A workshop at the Haaglanden Safety Region

03 July 2017

Tuesday 24 June was the professional competence day of the Haaglanden Safety Region. Ideas and visions were shared in the stylishly renovated farm "Delflandhoeve". What will training look like in 2020? And what does that mean for a fire brigade organization? These are just a few of the questions that the more than 30 employees of the professional department who attended this day.

FireWare was allowed to provide a workshop. The central theme was: what is a realistic training environment? And which new (and very old) insights can we use for this? Various new didactic ideas and concepts were discussed for inspiration. From interactive first aid simulators to escape rooms. From new modular training centres to your own city as a training centre...

Realism

There are several ways to look at realism. One concept assumes that the environment and situations are simulated as real as possible: sensory realism. Another mindset is that the student always realizes that the situation is “fake”, but that the dilemmas are real: seeing a realistic training environment as a game. Both methods are very useful, and if they are done well, the student can be completely absorbed in his training!

Game forms

To play with this concept, 4 groups have worked on coming up with fun, active games for 4 specialisms within the Haaglanden Safety Region. For example, we looked at game solutions for the Surf & Rescue team, the hooklift chassis operators, the crane operators and the cherry picker operators. Naturally, the results were presented to each other. And here were very useful game forms in between!

The day ended with a fun, informal barbecue. We thought it was fantastic that we as FireWare were able to support this inspiring event!
