CREATING REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS

Practice with smoke without actual smoke… and interactive too!

20 July 2023

There are many different situations in which you might want to practice dealing with smoke. These can include basic exercises, such as learning to use breathing apparatus, as well as scenario training, for example.

The most common way to practice is by using a smoke machine. However, this is not always feasible. Consider exercises in a hospital where you can't fill an entire ward with training smoke at once. And sometimes, it's just not practical – for instance, when teaching a trainee to use breathing apparatus, it's essential for the instructor to have clear visibility of the trainee's actions.

Of course, you could use a blindfold. But with a blindfold, the trainee can't be "rewarded" with more visibility when moving low to the ground or, conversely, have their sight further obstructed when standing upright. Additionally, a blindfold cannot simulate the dynamic aspect of smoke – the varying levels of visibility it provides.

That's why FireWare offers the NEBULA sets! The trainee wears a ski-mask-like device equipped with an LCD screen. The LCD screen can simulate six different levels of smoke density. With the accompanying remote control, the instructor can control up to four groups of masks.

Using a breathing apparatus? The NEBULA can also be adapted to fit onto a breathing apparatus with special static removable stickers. There's a suitable adapter for every brand of breathing apparatus!
