The 1-1-2 Club is an interactive learning environment where children learn how to deal with fire hazards in and around the home through play. In collaboration with Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam-Rijnmond, FireWare contributed to the redesign of this concept. The goal was to strengthen the overall experience and increase its impact, without oversimplifying the content.
In a safety region covering fifteen municipalities and over 1.2 million residents, fire prevention is an essential theme. The 1-1-2 Club demonstrates how young audiences can be made aware of risks in an accessible way, while also giving them practical tools for action.
Learning in the home of the Brandjes family
The 1-1-2 Club is located in a reconstructed house at the Schiedam fire station. This is where the fictional Brandjes family lives. Throughout their home, various unsafe situations arise.
Children follow a fixed route through different rooms and discover where fire hazards may be lurking. By completing hands-on assignments, they learn to recognize danger, prevent fires, plan an escape route, and correctly call 1-1-2 (the Dutch emergency number).
The concept is based on learning by doing and experiencing. It is not just about explaining, but about allowing children to experience situations and take action themselves.
The question behind the redesign
Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam-Rijnmond wanted to renew the 1-1-2 Club and make it future-proof. The key question was how to strengthen the existing concept by creating more cohesion, recognizability, and interaction—while ensuring it connects with children’s world of experience.
FireWare contributed by translating safety objectives into a logical and engaging whole. Storylines, characters, and tools were designed to reinforce one another and contribute to one consistent learning experience.
Co-creation in practice
The redesign was realized through close collaboration between FireWare and VRR. In a co-creative process, content, design, and practical experience were brought together. This way of working led to sharper decisions and shared ownership of the final result.
What FireWare realised
FireWare contributed to various elements within the 1-1-2 Club. Animated videos were developed in which the Brandjes family comes to life and situations are made relatable for children. In addition, voice-overs were recorded, including that of Firefighter Bob.
Interactive games were also designed, such as an electrical matching game featuring birdhouses, where play and learning come together. Across all elements, the focus was on simplicity, recognizability, and active participation.
Firefighter Bob as a guide
Firefighter Bob serves as the permanent guide within the Club. He helps children complete assignments, asks questions, and provides reassurance in exciting situations. Through animation and voice-over, a trusted character is created who connects the different parts of the house into one cohesive experience.
The driving force behind the Club
Georgette Plomp
The 1-1-2 Club is led by Georgette Plomp, also known as “Firefighter Sjors.” She is the driving force behind the concept and actively encourages children to adopt safer behavior.
In addition to her work within the Club, she is highly active on social media, where she reaches children and parents in an accessible way with safety messages. Her personal approach and visibility align seamlessly with the mission of the 1-1-2 Club.

Impact
The 1-1-2 Club shows that fire prevention can be highly effective when learning is designed to be active and relatable. Children leave the Brandjes family home with concrete insights and practical skills that they can apply in their own living environment.
For FireWare, this project is a strong example of how design, storytelling, and education can come together in a meaningful social context.
